WHAT THEY SAID.
Earlier today, Smith Westerns put this bad boy up to stream.
Smith Westerns just dropped this little gem on Soundcloud. We’ve got something special in the works around this… oh yes, yes we do.
Poliça
“Dark Star”
Give You the Ghost, 2012
Having overloaded on the new Knife album somewhat in recent weeks, I started scanning around the annals for stuff that might hit a similar spot when I came across this.
Poliça left no big impression on me in those cold, dark wintry nights when I first discovered their album ‘Give You the Ghost’ last year. Somehow they didn’t quite seem to stand out from the rest of the post-Silent Shout, post-XX crowd.
But maybe I just happened to pick the right day to give Poliça another chance - one of the first sunny days of the year in the UK - a warm Bank Holiday in May with gorgeous sunshine and many happy folk enjoying their day off. Poliça’s stylised moodiness seemed to reflect off this carefree ambience, all of a sudden transforming into a radiant shimmer I hadn’t quite managed to get a handle on in the winter.
While some might find the auto-tune effect on Channy Leaneagh’s voice unnecessary (she can obviously sing just fine), in this new light it shimmered and wobbled, as though hearing it from the bottom of a swimming pool - that moment when the sunlight manages to glint off a wave and temporarily blind you.
Most of all, Poliça truly know their way around a melody. It was difficult to pick a highlight from the album for this entry, so I went with the single. I can’t recommend the whole album highly enough though

Smith Westerns’ brand new Alan Del Rio Ortiz-directed video for “Varsity” has us feeling all warm and tingly.
…wait, what do you mean it’s not supposed to tingle?!
oh no, it’s supposed to tingle. BURNING though, burning is bad.
